Re: Sure, there's no Caturday thread
You've been posting some mighty weird looking cats lately, dear.
Re: Sure, there's no Caturday thread
It really is Caturday. I wondered why I could hear pathetic meowing outside my door and judt discovered that someone has left a box of kittens outside my front door. Thankfully, the mother is with them!

Re: Sure, there's no Caturday thread
I wish I could post pictures, but I haven't replaced my camera since it was stolen last year and my mobile phone is older than I am and takes crappy pictures so I've never bothered purchasing anything to transfer them to my computer.
When I noticed the mewling was very close and persistent, I peeked through the spy hole and noticed the mother cat and a cardboard box. I didn't connect the two initially so went out to see why there was a cardboard box on my veranda. Upon opening it, I saw two kittens that appeared to be about 4 or 5 weeks old and looked healthy enough.
The mother on the hand, looks somewhat emaciated. I had to go to the shop anyway, so I bought a little dry food for her.
I made a chicken stew this afternoon and dry fried the chicken allowing the natural fat to be released. I reserved most of this, along with the skin and gave them to her and she demolished those very quickly.
I wonder why they chose me as the recipient of their donation. Perhaps they thought that, as a gringo, I could afford it. It certainly couldn't be because they knew I'm a big softy as I have not interacted too intimately with my neighbours yet.
Still, they shall remain on my veranda and I will make sure there is always food and water and give what they call "carinho" here - affection!

Aw. Good on you for taking care of them. (but psst...bring them in or they'll get eaten).
Living out in the country has its pitfalls and this is one of them. Folks from the city will discover they have a pregnant cat, will drive out of the city to the end of your driveway, and drop her off - sometimes in full view of the owners of the house!
This happened last year. The cat ended up having 4 kittens (I've posted pics). Immediately after she had them, I had the mom spayed. Found a home for one of the kits but couldn't find homes for the rest, so they will be barn cat mousers. The kittens are now 4 months old and I just took the remaining three (2 boys & a girl) in yesterday to have them spayed/neutered. I guess they're staying.

But you know if I bring them in I'll become too attached to them and next thing you know they'll be pissing and shitting all over the place, destroying everything their path, sitting on my keyboard when I want to use it and generally acting like a cat. And then I'll have to deflea and deworm them and act like a parent again.
As for being eaten, I'm no longer in the middle of the natural jungle and the only wildlife here are other cats and rats and the mother has been doing a sterling job of seeing off the other cats (even though I rush out every time I hear her screech; 'ain't nothin' fiercer than a mom around her offspring)!

Ok, you talked me into it -I've brought them in, but mom still doesn't trust me, and why should she? We haven't met before today and all I've done is give her food and shelter.
Re: Sure, there's no Caturday thread
You ole softie. I'm proud of you.
Mom will come in eventually, when she realizes you have her babies.

Oh. she's in. She wouldn't leave her babies' sight. She was in the box when I brought it in and just growled at me. Once I left her and them in peace, she was fine.
Trust takes time and belief! Without either ...

So, she's out of the box and warily chewing on the chicken bones I left for her (and don't give me shit about bone splinters - I've never had a cat even suffer from that, let alone die) and she's enjoying the gristle and maybe the too much meat I "accidentally" left on them, but she's still highly wary!

LOL! Little do you know, you've just made a friend for life!

Re: Sure, there's no Caturday thread
Fuck, that means I have to give these shits names and do the whole parental thing. This is getting too much; I've avoided all forms of permanence since I came to Brazil because it was never permanent. How the worm turns because of a few goddamn cats!
Re: Sure, there's no Caturday thread
Well, that was unexpected. I awoke to find the box empty! It was too large for the kitties to have climbed out themselves and I assumed that mom had taken them out and absconded (I'd left the front door ajar). And then I saw mom munching on some chicken bones I'd left next to the box and then saw the kitties ensconced in my dirty clothes pile. Fuck, they've invaded my house and are mobile! This does not bode well!
